DuraFlex Crown Repair Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

DuraFlex Crown Repair: The West Chester Owner’s Guide

DuraFlex crown repair in West Chester typically runs $340-$680 installed, depending on whether we’re sealing surface cracks or replacing the entire crown assembly. We stock DuraFlex-compatible crown repair materials on every truck, and most jobs are completed in a single visit once the camera inspection confirms the scope. Most West Chester owners discover the problem during a routine sweep or after spotting water stains on the ceiling near the fireplace, especially in older colonials where the crown has been shedding its mortar wash for years without anyone noticing.

Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To

DuraFlex crowns are found on two distinct product lines, and mixing them up means ordering the wrong part. The DuraFlex SW (stainless wall) series uses a stamped stainless crown with a welded collar that mates to a 6-, 7-, or 8-inch flue diameter. The DuraFlex HT (high temperature) series, common on factory-built fireplace installations from 2012-2019, uses a heavier cast crown with a bolt-on collar and a wider overhang. The label is stamped on the collar underside, visible from the roof with a flashlight; if the tag’s weathered off, measure the flue OD and the crown overhang. A 1.5-inch overhang with a welded collar means SW. A 2.5-inch overhang with three bolt holes means HT.

We source OEM DuraFlex crowns through Haven’s buying network, but we also carry aftermarket equivalents from Olympia Chimney and Gelco when the OEM lead time stretches past two weeks. For West Chester’s freeze-thaw cycle, we prefer the thicker cast aftermarket crowns on HT systems because the extra mass resists the spalling that kills thinner stampings by March. The SW series, though, we keep OEM - the welded collar geometry is exact, and an aftermarket collar that sits 1/8-inch proud will funnel water straight down the flue wall.

Signs Your DuraFlex Crown Repair Is Failing

Signs Your DuraFlex Crown Repair Is Failing
  • Hairline cracks radiating from the flue collar. These start as shrinkage cracks in the mortar wash, then widen each winter as water freezes in the gap. By year three in West Chester’s climate, a 1/32-inch crack becomes a 3/16-inch channel that dumps water behind the crown.
  • Rust streaks down the chimney face below the crown. The DuraFlex collar is stainless, but the fasteners and the underlying flue adapter are often galvanized. Once water breaches the crown, the rust runs down in telltale orange ribbons that owners spot from the driveway.
  • Spalling or flaking on the crown surface. This is the freeze-thaw cycle doing its work. The crown’s top surface delaminates in thin sheets, and each sheet that falls off reduces the slope that sheds water. On flat-topped DuraFlex crowns, this is usually terminal.
  • Water stains on the ceiling near the chimney breast. By the time this shows up inside, water has already traveled down the flue liner, saturated the smoke chamber, and found a path through the masonry. The crown was leaking for one or two seasons before this appeared.
  • Loose or missing flue collar sealant. DuraFlex crowns ship with a high-temp silicone bead between collar and crown body. UV and temperature cycling harden it in four to six years. Once it cracks, water enters the joint and corrodes the collar-to-flue connection from the inside.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Price Range What’s Included
Crown seal / crack repair (DuraFlex SW) $340-$480 Surface prep, flexible crown sealant, collar re-seal, photo documentation
Partial crown rebuild (DuraFlex HT) $520-$680 Form and pour new crown, replace collar fasteners, seal flue joint, photo documentation
Full crown assembly replacement $580-$820 OEM or spec-matched aftermarket crown, removal and disposal, new sealant, written warranty

The range depends on three factors: whether we can repair in place or need to remove the assembly, whether the flue collar is salvageable, and how many courses of brick we need to protect with a mortar wash while the crown cures. Every price is written before work starts, under Haven Standard Clause 1. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers labor and materials. We also stock HeatShield and Gelco crown repair materials for systems where a full DuraFlex replacement isn’t the right fix.

DIY or Call Us?

An owner can safely check three things from the ground with binoculars: crack pattern, rust staining, and crown slope. What you cannot safely do is work on a chimney crown without proper fall protection. The crown is the highest point of the structure, often on a 6/12 or steeper roof, and the surface is sloped to shed water - exactly the wrong geometry for footing. The mortar repair itself looks simple but fails within a season if the surface isn’t ground out to sound concrete and the mix isn’t formulated for crown exposure.

We don’t recommend DIY crown repair for DuraFlex systems because the collar-to-flue seal is a combustion safety joint. A gap there can allow carbon monoxide to escape the flue or allow water to enter and damage the liner below. Our crew carries the grinding tools, the crown-forming forms, and the high-temp sealants matched to DuraFlex specs. Call (610) 321-4570 and we’ll quote it in writing before anyone climbs.
